The first step in designing a storage system
is to first determine the number and size of pallets needing
storage, plus, determine the type of equipment (and size) to be used
in handling the load. The next step is to gather information
on the storage area, including overall size. Armed with the
above information, you can then start looking at the best design of
your storage system.

Selective Pallet Rack is the
most common type of rack used in industry. Selective Rack
allows for 100% selectivity, thus the name, and is the
most cost effective method of storage.
Approximately 40% of the available
floor space is used for storage with the balance (60%) is used for
aisles. Budget pricing: $30.00 to $40.00/ pallet position.

Drive In Rack is used in applications where
you have several (4 to 20) pallets of the same product.
This method is usually 'First in-Last out (FILO)). The
main advantage of drive-in rack is that it allows you to dedicate a
greater portion of floor space to storage when compared to selective
rack. Drive-in rack is approximately two to three times
as expensive as Selective Rack. Budget pricing: $60.00 to
$80.00/pallet position.

Advance Storage
Products 
Push Back Rack is used in applications
where you might have 3 to 6 pallets of the same product, yet
have limited floor space. Push back rack is two to three times
as expensive as Drive-in rack. Budget Pricing: $175.00 to
$225.00/ pallet position.

Live Pallet Flow Rack is used in
applications requiring deep lane storage. Applications include
freezer installations where large numbers of similar
pallets: (ie 500 pallet loads of one type orange juice)
needing freezer space. In this application, the main cost
consideration is not the rack, but the cost of the freezer.
Budget prices will run from $200.00 to $500.00 per pallet
position

Kingway Carton Flow Rack are used in 'Picking'
applications. The general idea is to collect a 'little' of all
products, and hold these items in flow rack. Flow racks are
available in 60", 90", 120" and 180" deep shelves.
The width of the shelf will vary from 60 to 120" wide. In many
cases, flow rack can be incorporated into Selective Pallet
Rack. The idea is to utilize the vertical space in the
warehouse, using the lower space for carton flow, with the upper
space used for reserve storage.

Clymer Cantilever Rack is used in applications
where long objects need to be stored. Examples include
pipe, tube, lumber as well as furniture storage. Specific standards have been established over the
years for certain types of storage, such as 'lumber rack'. In
most cases, the arm used to support lumber is 48" long and is rated
at 2,000#/arm. In this arrangement, bundles of lumber
weighting up to 400#/foot, can be stored, if the arms are located
between 48 to 54" apart. Cantilever Rack is available in both
the 'roll formed' and 'structural' design.
Drum Storage
Rack consist of standard Selective Rack components with the addition
of 'drum cradles', supported from the horizontal beams. The
drum cradles prevent movement from 'side to side', so as to separate
one drum from another. The equipment shown is from Modern
Equipment Company, MECO-Omaha. MECO manufactures
a wide range of equipment, include all types of storage rack, hand
trucks, and other industrial equipment.
 
Wireway/Husky Rack Accessories include a variety of
items. The most common types of accessories include the
following: Front post guards, double columns, heavy duty lower
horizontals, wire guards, wire decks, pallet supports as well
as many more.

Nashville Wire decks are used in applications where
items may not be stored on full depth pallets. The most common
size wire deck is a 2" by 4" grid, with either 4 or 5 ga. wire,
rated between 2,000# to 2,500#/deck. The decks are usually
designed to be supported from the 'step' of the selective rack 'roll
formed' beam. The most common size step is 1-5/8"
deep. Since beam designs vary, it is important to know
the manufacture of rack, in order to make sure the deck will fit
properly in the step beam. Please note wire decks can also be
provided on structural rack. As a general rule, decks are
ordered only after one had determined all information regarding the
selective rack, which will support the decks. As an example,
if the bay opening is 42" deep by 96" wide, with beam rated at
5,000#/level, the wire decks would be 42" deep by 46" wide,
rated at 2,500#/deck, designed to fit.... Kingway/
Autoloc, Interlake, or Steel King. In other words, you
need to specify the manufacture of rack and type of components
used.

Guard nets are usually used in
applications where there is a possibility product may fall in an
area where people may walk. As a general rule, you try to keep
people from 'harms way', however there will be cases where guard
nets should be installed.
- Angles:
Structural, Roll formed,
Floor
guide angles are required on all narrow aisle applications, if the
fork truck is not equipped with the electronics to follow a
'wire guided' system. The most common type of floor guide is
4" by 3" by 3/8" structural angle. These angles are provided
in 20'-0" lengths, and are anchored on 24" centers, with 1/2" by
3-3/4" anchors. At the feed and discharge end of the aisle, a
heavier angle is used, usually a 4" by 3" by 1/2" angle, anchored on
12" centers, with 5/8" anchors. This heavier section is
usually only 10'-0" long. In applications using guide angle,
the fork truck must be equipped with special guide rollers, which
extend out beyond the sides of the truck. This information is
available from the truck manufacture. The clear space between
the guide angle is usually about an 1" greater than the guide roller
width. As a general rule, special consideration is given to
the feed end of the system, with the addition of some type of flared
entry.

Bulk storage rack are available in two
general styles, light duty roll formed, plus the formed angle, rivit
connection. In each instance, a fiberboard or plywood shelf
surface is supported from steel beams.
